Legal challenges of interoperable eHealth solutions: special issue of European Journal of Biomedical Informatics now online!

Empirica researchers Dr. Karl A. Stroetmann and Jörg Artmann have contributed an article to a special issue of the European Journal of Biomedical Informatics (www.ejbi.org/en/ejbi/) on the legal challenges of interoperable eHealth solutions. Resulting from the experience of empirica projects such as eHealth strategies (www.ehealth-strategies.eu) and empirica involvement in epSOS (www.epsos.eu), this article presents a comparative analysis of eHealth relevant legislation in EU Member States. Challenges of electronic identification and authentication are examples, alongside questions regarding healthcare professional liability, patient consent and data storage. The answers EU Member States have found to these challenges are illustrated in this contribution. The epSOS approach of framework agreements to address challenges resulting from different legal systems at national level are also presented.
