New version of the MAFEIP Tool

The MAFEIP study (Support Services for the Management and Utilization of Monitoring and Assessment of the EIP-MAFEIP Tool) was carried out by Open Evidence (coordinator) and empirica between November 2016 and 2017. The study facilitated the further development and use of the MAFEIP tool by members of the European Innovation Partnership on Active and Healthy Ageing (EIP on AHA). In 2018 a new and more adaptable version of the MAFIP tool was launched.

The purpose of the MAFEIP tool is to estimate the health and economic outcomes of a large variety of social and technological innovations in the health and care sector relative to current care. Examples of innovative interventions include new care pathways, devices, surgical techniques, organisational models, among others. The tool provides an early assessment of the likelihood that interventions will achieve the anticipated impact. At the same time, it helps to identify what drives interventions’ effectiveness or efficiency in order to guide further design, development or evaluation, providing valuable support to the decision making process.

The study fostered the creation of a thriving community of users. Based on the feedback received from the community, the tool has been improved in order to facilitate its adoption as an analytical framework in Europe which could predict with better precision the value of the innovation for citizens and other stakeholders. One of the main changes implemented to the tool, following suggestions from the community of MAFEIP users, was the introduction of more complex Markov models for the patient flow between health states. For this reason, the tool has been adapted to make, next to the original 3-state Markov model, 4-state and 5-state analyses possible. Furthermore, the tool also now permits advanced users to conduct probabilistic analyses of their interventions, a new module which also supports 3-, 4-, or 5-state Markov models. The probabilistic analysis module is available for free as part of the MAFEIP tool, by request.

empirica has updated the existing comprehensive User Guide Manual so that it now reflects the changes in the new version of the tool adapted by Open Evidence. The User Guide can be consulted here. The video tutorial series is in the process of being adapted and new videos, including several covering the new probabilistic analysis module, will be made available online on the MAFEIP website shortly.

The MAFEIP tool continues to support evaluations conducted in the EIP on AHA support action We4AHA – Widening the support for large scale uptake of Digital Innovation for Active and Healthy Ageing, and is open to supporting evaluations as part of relevant calls under Horizon 2020.
