Challenge
Despite significant progress in creating digital twins for individual organs, the healthcare sector lacks an integrated framework that combines these models into a cohesive whole-body simulation. Such integration is essential for enabling personalised medicine, improving clinical decision-making, and enhancing patient outcomes.
Solutions
The EDITH project (Ecosystem for Digital Twins in Healthcare) is a Coordination and Support Action (CSA) funded by the European Commission, dedicated to advancing the development of a fully integrated Virtual Human Twin (VHT). Building upon advancements in digital technologies, high-performance computing, and the increasing availability of research and healthcare data across Europe, EDITH aims to transition from isolated single-organ digital twins to comprehensive, multiscale, and multiorgan whole-body digital representations.
Results
By providing a strategic roadmap and fostering a collaborative ecosystem, EDITH is laying the groundwork for the next generation of digital twins in healthcare. The project’s outcomes are expected to accelerate the adoption of integrated digital twin technologies, leading to more personalised and effective healthcare solutions across Europe.
