Challenge
Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (HCM) is the most prevalent inherited heart disease, affecting approximately 1 in 200 to 1 in 500 individuals. Characterised by the thickening of the heart muscle, HCM increases the risk of arrhythmias and sudden cardiac death, particularly among young athletes. Despite its genetic diversity and varied clinical presentations, HCM is often diagnosed and treated as a singular condition, leading to suboptimal patient care.
Solutions
The SMASH-HCM project is developing an advanced digital twin platform aimed at revolutionising the stratification and management of HCM. By integrating multilevel and multiorgan dynamic biophysical models with data-driven approaches, the project employs a three-tiered deep phenotyping strategy. This approach facilitates a comprehensive understanding of individual patient profiles, enabling personalised treatment plans. The platform is designed for seamless integration into clinical workflows, enhancing decision-making for healthcare professionals and empowering patients in their care journey.
Results
SMASH-HCM aspires to transform HCM care by providing tools for precise risk assessment and personalised management strategies. The project’s outcomes include validated preclinical tools, a stratification and management strategy tested in a pilot clinical trial, and a roadmap for rapid regulatory approval. By addressing the complexities of HCM, SMASH-HCM sets the foundation for future digital twin platforms applicable to other cardiac diseases, promoting a shift towards precision medicine in cardiology.
